Big Project : Small Project - Five Tips for Starting Projects

Updated: Aug 2, 2023

Embarking on a new project can be daunting. Or, maybe it's something simple and easily achievable. Either way, some level of thought and consideration went into your decision to start a new project.

Every project is unique. And everyone's perspective of what makes a big or small project is different. The size of your project encompasses many things. Here a 5 tips to help you get started!

1. Budget - What will it cost? Is it a reasonable price?

2. Availability of materials - It can be difficult to get certain materials sometime, especially post-pandemic. Also, check lead time on materials. If you need something to be able to complete a step in your project, make sure it'll arrive on-time and not delay your project.

3. Time - How much time you have to complete your project? Some projects take longer than others. Nobody wants to be one of those people that starts something and never finishes.

4. The level of effort required to complete your project - do you have the energy to put into this project right now? Life gets busy and sometimes we take on more than we can handle...be realistic about what you can do...it should be fun, not stressful.

5. Benefits - What are the benefits of completing the project? Will it increase your home value? Will it make living in your home more pleasant? Will it give you somewhere nice to sit and drink your coffee in the morning, or watch the sunset with a drink in the evening?

All of these things, and more, play a part in the decision to embark on a new project. Each of these factors will be different for each person and it's a very personal decision on how to spend the time, money and effort, as well as what your goals are for a project.

Large projects often require expertise and can be expensive. Personally, I'd never replace a roof or build a deck. But, I would fence a pasture and paint a house.

Some of my posts will contain tips, resources, and how-tos for some projects we did around our property, so look out for them!

If a project seems overwhelming for your level of skill or experience, try breaking it down into smaller tasks. If there are certain tasks that are beyond your level of confidence or require specific expertise consider hiring a contractor to conduct those parts of the project. For example, when I painted the outside of our house some areas were too high and awkward for me to reach safely, so I hired a professional to do the parts I couldn't.
